Wife After Death – Press Release

For Immediate Release

The Oakville Players present …  Wife After Death by Eric Chappell

The Oakville Players presents its 2nd show of the 12/13 season, a hilarious comedy – Wife After Death, playing March 21-24 and March 27-30, 2013 at the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts in downtown Oakville.   Come on out enjoy a lovely dinner at one of Oakville’s fine restaurants and then laugh yourself silly at this witty British comedy. Eric Chappell is an English comedy writer who wrote or co-wrote some of Britain’s biggest television situation comedies during the 1970s, ’80s, and ’90s.  He has also written several plays.

David Thursby, a comedian and national television treasure has died, and on the day of his funeral, friends and colleagues gather beside his coffin to pay their last respects. The funeral is held at the home of Laura Thursby the grieving widow played by Burlington resident Ilene Elkaim.  Also in attendance are Harvey Barrett, (Robert Laszcz) Dave’s long-time writer, his wife Vi (Linda Morawiec), Dave’s agent Kevin Prewitt (David Raitt) and his wife Jane (Mary Stockwell of Hamilton). An unfamiliar woman has arrived in flamboyant mourning clothes and turns out to be Kay, (Wendy Oughtred of Burlington) Dave’s wife from before he was famous. Kay gives a series of revelations about Dave’s past leading some of the guests to wonder if they ever knew the “real” Dave. Hilarity continues as more truths are revealed. Even from the grave, Dave seems to be getting the last laugh!

The show is directed by Bernard Pointet of Mississauga and produced by Mary Rose of Oakville. Rehearsals began in earnest in January and have been progressing steadily despite the hysterical bouts of laughter.  Director Pointet struggles to maintain his composure as the characters in this play are almost as funny as the cast.  Each actor has delved deeply into the psyche of their character to bring out every nuance of hilarity possible.  Producer Rose has been assembling an incredible crew of volunteers all specially trained not to laugh while the play proceeds so as not to drown out the patrons.  The Oakville Centre staff is fully qualified in emergency first aid to assist anyone overcome by amusement.  Yeah, it’s that funny!

I’m back on stage! – Wife After Death

As you may know, I have over the past couple of years taken a sabbatical of sorts from acting. This March, I am returning to the theatre in The Oakville Players’ production of Wife After Death. It’s a British play by the well-known UK writer Eric Chappell.

Comedian and national treasure Dave Thursby has died, and on the day of his funeral, friends and colleagues gather beside his coffin to pay their last respects. But an unfamiliar woman is about to arrive, bringing with her a series of revelations about Dave’s dubious past…

It’s a great modern play in the classic drawing room tradition, in which I have a relatively small but significant and funny part. And it has British accents – who can resist a British accent?

Movember – Day 1

It’s Movember 1st, and I’m getting involved this year by growing a fine moustache throughout the month of November to raise awareness of men’s health issues, especially prostate cancer and mental health. Too many men in this world delay or avoid seeking medical help for these issues, some of them feeling that it’s weakness to go to a doctor for “nothing”.

Who’s with me? Want to form a team, or do you have a team already that needs an extra member? Let me know!

Or, you can support my moustache growing efforts by making a donation. In doing so you’ll be helping the 1 in 7 men that will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime and the 1 in 5 who experience a mental illness this year. Thank you. http://mobro.co/davidraitt

More updates to come throughout Movember!

COMICS ARTISTS – I’ll Write ***YOUR*** Script

Professional script development and writing service for your comics idea! For more information, contact me through my website at https://offtopic.davidraitt.com.

If you’re an aspiring comics artist, you know you need a great portfolio to showcase your work. That portfolio needs to include examples of sequential art – panels and pages – to demonstrate your ability to tell a story through your art.

Many artists know this, but lack the experience to write an engaging story they can then draw. So, they search for a writer to collaborate with. Online, they find hundreds of solicitations from writers, most promising that their script is the next “Alan Moore classic”. And then the writer argues with them when their great work doesn’t fit the writer’s “vision”.

But you have your own ideas, and wouldn’t it be more motivating – and FUN – to draw those instead?

If you’re looking for a way to express yourself, I can help!

I am a professional writer with over a decade’s experience writing and producing live theatre. (In 2008, I was nominated for a Canadian Comedy Award for Best One-Person Show.) Like you, I aspire to make comics, and am now offering my writing and script development services to comics artists.

Your ideas and story remain your property and will be treated with discretion. I will sign non-disclosure agreements and releases if you wish. We will discuss your artwork and ideas, and I will help you develop your story, or improve on the one you’ve already begun. At the end of the process, you will have a complete, comics-ready script that you can draw and include in your portfolio.

What does the service cost? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. I only request that you credit me as “writer” or “co-writer” for all submissions and/or publication. If you want a true “ghost-written” script, we can negotiate an acceptable fee up front.

However, this offer may expire at any time, as my unique service has generated a lot of interest, and my available time may fill up quickly. Don’t wait any longer – take that next step toward entering the comics industry TODAY!

For more information, contact me through my website at https://offtopic.davidraitt.com.

***Serious inquiries only, please. You must be committed to working toward publication or recognition in the comics industry. I can only accept submissions for ideas that will appeal to a wide audience. And unfortunately, I’m not working on manga at this point in time.
